So, what do you get? Well, in the grand scheme of all things Sony it’s actually pretty impressive. This V-Series TV has the full range of goodies that make it one the hit TV’s for 2009. Live Colour deliversoffers 4 levels of colour processing which gives optimal colour purity every time.
The Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) is pretty much standard on all of their flatscreens now (actually, if it wasn’t you soon notice the difference!). ACE works by adjusting the backlighting level dynamically to deliver a great range of graduation i.e. deep, dark colours and blacks are created reproduced with exceptional detail, even in the darkest of scenes. And all with no loss of brightness
On screen nav is exactly as it should be - childishly simple! Sony have been moving towards the easy to understand layout and functionality currently seen in their PS3 console. One-touch Scene Select - it’s a little button on the remote that lets select the correct mode for the programmes currently on screen. To be fair, let the TV deal with the hard part - all you need to do is sit back and enjoy.
Sony have dubbed the KDL-40W5500 and “Eco TV”. It doesn’t ram Japanese whaling scientific research vessels. Rather, it’s been built to be as power efficient as possible. There’s a range of enhancements such as the PC Power Management and Power Saving modes which should eclipse some of the more power hungry models on the market right now. Before I move on, one noteworthy addition is the power-saving ambient Light Sensor which automatically detects ambient light levels in the room and adjusts the LCD panels brightness accordingly. This gives not only reduced power consumption but actually makes viewing the picture more comfortable on the eyes.
BRAVIA Theatre Sync
The allows the one touch control of all your compatible AV devices. By sending special control signals via HDMI cable a single commands on the LCDs remote control can control other components such as DVD players and home theatre systems.
The 40W5500 lets you view films in their native 24p format (that’s not the budget for the film, although in some cases you’d be forgiven for thinking it was!). Movies are recorded 24 frames per second but most televisions play back at 25 frames per second which means the images are moving faster than originally intended. Apparently, 24p True Cinema “..lets you view movies the way the director intended”!
Picture Frame Mode
When the KDL40W5500 is not in use you can turn it into a giant digital picture frame with the Picture Frame mode. PFM lets you create an electronic photo album that will cycle through your holiday photos - just what you need; more ways of looking at your mates ‘really great holiday snaps’!
